Mac or/& PC

Yesterday I made my transition from a PC to a Mac it was not what I had expected, I haven’t realized how little I actually know about a Mac and their operating system, I assumed that I would just transfer all my  media and files onto the Mac. It got hectic I couldn’t open office, every time I move the mouse to a corner “widgets” or “spaces” would activated, very beautiful graphics but I was still unsure was happening. I have always been one of those people that learn to adjust very easy,   when I switched from windows XP to windows Vista  it was very simple to me, XP looked like it got a facelift. On the other hand switching to the leopard O.S was like being with a new person just minor resemblance to windows interface. I own an iphone, after looking at Mac O.S I started to realize how uniform they fit together the iphone and Mac.  Now I have only had a little experience with my Macbook which is top of the line:(4GB RAM, 2.4GHZ duo, 250GB hard drive). So far I am impressed just perplexed with operating system. I plan on becoming an expert with all the controls and the entire Mac O.S. the reason I switching from Vista to Leopard is because of all the online feedback I hear about Mac and how they are so superior to PC. The most compelling clams are: “If you spend more time trying to get your computer to work and less time doing what you want, it’s time to get a Mac. Because Apple makes both the software and the hardware, everything works together, just as it should. That’s why people who get a Mac love a Mac. And why you will, too.” I assumed they are referring to Windows being unreliable, always having an issue and shutting down programs. Well this is partly true most PC users assume that is part of computing life (claim) that “sometimes” something will not work or shutdown. I believe what apple is claiming is that these pesky obstacles should not be part of our experience on computers.

When you buy a PC, you’re buying hardware from one company and an operating system and software from other companies. Not so with a Mac. Because Apple builds both the computer and the software that comes with it, they’re literally made for each other. This means that a Mac rarely freezes or crashes. Occasionally an application might quit, but it won’t affect the rest of your system. And Mac OS X resists most viruses, so you can do anything — without worrying about losing everything. Is another claim  by apple that because apple builds both the hardware and software the product is extremely reliable, what I like about apple is they are quite casual in their claims they are saying that  a application/program “might quit but it will not affect the rest of your computer” meaning it’s not a 100% but more reliable then a PC. The final statement I hear is quite true that the Mac OS resist most viruses, apparently the drive behind this is that apples O.S is only used buy a minority of all computer users and a “hackers” when they release a virus is to affect as many people as possible, so apple are less likely to become affect which would be true for the time being.

I will be adding to this blog-tony

Screen Shot

Working in digital space can be a lot different than working in physical space. Digital space in much easier then the real world would ever be the ability to go back and fix mistakes, edit and move things around, work on multiple things at once although that is not a good idea.

The real world and working on paper is outdated I believe close to nobody writes books or papers on actual paper. Humans are bound to make mistakes and computers give humans the ability to go back and fix mistakes as well as help them find them.  The advantages of working in the digital world outweigh the negatives which can actually be variable.

The only negatives are why people didn’t have the ability to work in the digital world before, not mention the many distractions we face when working in the digital world. First of music can be played when working on project it can either help us or hurt us. Second the internet can be a bit of a distraction whether is clicking link after link in the Wikipedia or being bombarded with notifications from social networking websites we can easily be distracted by the digital space. Digital space also has the flaw of mechanical errors, with problems such as people’s computers not being compatible with each other which give them the inability to exchange work; although this problem is receding it sometimes affects us.

The main idea is the digital space makes things either to mend to our own liking and the advantage of editing and saving documents, merging them and sending them to each other.

Visual Glossary

1. Looking

Looking has many definitions, depending on how you “look” at the word it could be mean simply your eyes glancing at a object nearby, “1: to make sure or take care (that something is done)2: to ascertain by the use of one's eyes <look what I brought you>”. In terms of authority can looking be like the photo shows a government watching over you with mechanical eyes? Usual when using the work “looking” it is to direct someone’s attention to something. The word “looking” can also take on a more complex meaning such as in art to what the photograph directs your eye too. The pattern your eyes follow in a painting. Sometimes looking can be directed to a specific direction with arrows and even driving, companies and traffic authorities have different methods for directing our attention to specific advertising or traffic signals. Even websites are designed with looking in mind.

2. Visual culture

Visual culture, from my understanding of it, is defined as the way a visual piece looks like at specific time period that reflects the culture of the civilization that created it. “examination of imagery produced by a culture in terms of its use and construction or reinforcement of that culture in a visual form.” This apple logo I believe came out in the 1980’s which is a retro time period the logo (which actually resembles a gay pride flag) is a reflection of the1980s when the logo would have been in style. Currently the apple logo is very modern and clean cut just like the style of our time.

3) Photographic truth

Photographic truth may actually be a very simple concept that simply states how real photography is. This photo which was actually a very controversial advertisement that “Dove” released on how distorted the image of beauty is. The model for the add was actually a unattractive women then after some makeup and \hair done the model is transformed finally the Photoshop is done which actually maybe the deadliest culprit to photographic truth.  The idea is what can we believe? Even photos can be altered.

4) Icon

An icon is something that represents something else, the fish which suppose to represent Jesus and Christianity when it was thought to be a pagan religion. Now the fish is a wide spread symbol or icon. The word icon can also mean something the represents a whole bunch of things  such a person being a “sex icon” the word icon can also have prestige factor to it like a company’s logo or its “icon” represents its quality.

5) Information design

Information design I believe is the way we use design to make information presentable in a very interesting way, instead of just presenting figures we can now present numbers and information with different interesting looking graphs which I believe is the basis of information design.“When the crafting of messages and meaning is so central to our lives, information design is not only important—it is essential.”   The idea is that information can longer just be presented in a boring way but rather with a more eye catching appeal.

4c) Playstation 3, Grand theft auto, political statement, Controversy, GameStop, Rock star games, childrens game, adult game, Mature, paradox, cartoon, fox, Cat, Firefox

6) I believe that Google does the most work of the search engines. Google is dominant with all its results although they can be general. Alta Vista seems to have a outdated logo but the results tend to gear towards education, Yahoo and Google are both the among the most popular but not so much for Alta vista which is not as popular.

13) three pieces of advice for people trying to conduct research on the web and trying to assess the validity and credibility of websites in general, is to check the websites name .com’s seem to be less valid then .org or .gov because they are most likely nonprofit websites., do the statistics or numbers seem realistic to be used as fact and where did the research come from?  Most of the time research tends to be most reliable if it is the least unbiased, usually from school websites (.edu) which have databases. 13.b) the visual content on the web can be altered with developments in “Photoshop” technology   the best way to check validity and credibility of visual content to think critically if the photo is possible. Second is to check the website it came from.
