Final Thoughts

Wow the blog was something I never thought I would be doing; instead I actually really liked it. The blog is a tool to sorta express your opinion on issues and communicate with others. I enjoyed the comp 106 class more then the other two I took before and yes I was placed in comp 99. But we live and we learn and I learned that it was much better to actually learn and take a course for no credit although the comp 106 was my favorite because we ACTUALLY use what we learn. Whether you admit or not we are living in the age where computer use is evitable and comp 106 is a multi-media course and that’s exactly what we did. The blog was one weapon in the multi-media arsenal to help display and communicate with others about many of the activities we conducted in class !! one of favorite was the ISM exercise which I really liked placing a photo with a word. We even had a speaker discussing the evolution of photography, which resembled Velma from Scooby Doo, which was cool. The blog is actually a example in the change of transfer of information which I thought was really neat. We started with written print that we moved on to the E-form E-mail E-everything even school. The final thought is the course was amazing I actually looked forward to coming to class and waking up every Tuesday and Thursday. I will hopefully continue to use this blog in the future.

Second Life EX credit

Second life is quite a game with many different worlds. I started heading to the web site and creating a account which was actually simple. I found interesting that the last name was already predetermined my avatars last name the names were actually quite strange some that I have never heard of before I named mine moonwall a strange name tony moonwall imagine that was a really name !. the avatar was created it was one that looked like it came out of soul caliber III with large flaps and gown it was male it resembled a Asian man from Japanese manga or comics. The next step was to download the program which I did it was about 60MB and did not take that long to download. Opening the program it reminded me of roller coaster tycoon or flight simulator the last games I have played on a computer. With buttons along the bottom and the top the game requires a log in, the game its self is actually like a RPG but like all the online RPG they are endless and can never be beaten a avatar can only become stronger. The game opens a tutorial that helps me get started in the game I have to say my favorite part was being able to fly around the whole location but it was really small but I believe that there are more places that can be accessed that I do not the privileges to access. As I walked around I noticed a wall with stuff that people no longer wanted like a craigslist in a artificial world, I searched for a location that was the university of Michigan Dearborn but online I did not understand why I would get a error every time I tried to access it. The avatars seemed to have magic powers with wanted a item from the wall they would simply just raise there hands and balls would go from there hands to the wall and the item would be received. The avatar I created after a close look at the face resembles a employee I recently fired accept with a nose-job. The modifications I made to the avatar were removing cloth from it making it nude, which resembles a ken doll with no penis or vagina? The next thing I noticed was the avatar was androgens very strange. I was able to make the eye color anything I wanted. Made it blue. The best part was the ability to take a screen shot from within the game and that made it simpler. The most interesting thing I found was that as I was born into the second life world many before me and after came with the same idea of spheres of light then creating humans its like a online directory of artificial humans something if found to be very interesting. The second life game was actually fun but get bored of repetition very fast and that was the game was a endless one.

Hello geeks and nerds I mean scientist, this should arose you!!! The large Hadron collider was finished and may run its first particle, this large contraption may seem like some a machine out of a science fiction movie but it is very real, it has the ability to shoot particles at about the speed of light and can help humans explain the big bang a little better. The Large Hadron Collider was completed in 2008 and it large about 20 miles crossing both France and Switzerland. We will be back soon !!!
Segment Music Clip: Rammstein – Bang Bang Minutes: .5
Segment: It’s a Particle accelerator!! Minutes: 3
Jesus son of Virgin Mary do I love that song. If you just tuned in we are giving you the lowdown on the newly completed Large Hadron Collider in Europe, now what the hell is it ??? The large Hadron Collider does just what the name suggest it Collides particles specifically protons and Ions, the collision of particles at almost the speed of light should create Quark-Glue-ON plasma which can only be created under EXTERMLEY high temperatures and density. The creation of Quark Glue-ON plasma may help scientist recreate the state of matter during the BIG BANG this can really help turn theory in to fact. The Large Hadron Collider can also help with explaining the nature of DARK matter and ANTI matter, which the universe is supposedly 70% made of. The first order of business for the Large Hadron Collider is explaining the Higgs boson the Higgs boson for you Physics rookies is “hypothetical” elementary particle meaning it can not be broken down any smaller!! It is the last of the “standard model” that has not been observed it’s the link between “mass-less and a heavy Boson. That’s some crazy stuff we will be back with the final stage!!
End Segment Music Clip: PPK- Resurrection (Space Mix) Minutes: 2
Ending: The Monsters Science Can Create Minutes : 1
Wow cant believe we are almost finished, Now the Large Hadron Collider is Huge and very power Machine BUT some people are actually thinking the Large Hadron Collider is going to create a Black hole on earth?? Creating a Black hole on earth by the large Hadron Collider might be as likely as a Nuclear Reactor Exploding and KILLING THOUSANDS OF People!!!!!!! Now I hope everyone knows that a nuclear reactor CANNOT explode!!!! Because it DOES not have a Critical MASS, which is the trigger, that nuclear bombs have to create Fusion/fission depending on the bomb. Anyways the what IM trying to explain is that the Large Hadron Collider is cool as hell but it can’t create a black hole!! And if it did that would last for SPLIT Second!! Anyways I will keep you folks updated on the Large Hadron Collider since is down now and may not be up till summer 2009 Good night and good luck!!

Large Hadron Collider Big Bang Fact Not Theory?

The name “Large Hadron Collider” may seem like it came out of science fiction movie, it actually might. The large Hadron collider is very real it exists in Europe and is going to do a lot interesting things It may explain the origins of the universe. It was finished in 2008 and has may change the way we look at things.
The Large Hadron collider is a particle accelerator that “Collides Hadrons” at about the speed of light, matter acts very differently. The enormous machine is partly in France and partly in Switzerland. Lots of funding was needed to complete this behemoth.
The completion of the large Hadron collider is significant to me because I think it is a step closer to gain better evidence for the “Big Bang Theory” and other factors that the Hadron collider will explore such as the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and better explain what fills the universe. The understanding of dark matter and dark energy may help understand the origins of our universe.
The one section of the Large Hadron Collider I am partially interested in is the CMS, which is the compact muon solenoid it detects particles moving at about the speed of light. This will help the physicist recreate the conditions that existed during the first billionth of a second of the Big Bang. The Big Bang created equal amounts matter and anti-matter, the large Hadron collider will help us see what may have happened to the anti-matter.
One other important function of the Hadron collider is to explain why do some particles have mass well others not? Particles of light do not have any, on the other hand matter particles which do have mass.
It is scary number knowing that 96% of the universe is missing, the Large Hadron Collider can help determine what dark matter is made of, which is what the universe may be made of. One of the most important discovers that the Large Hadron collider will make is the discovery of the Higgs boson, which is the last undiscovered particle among the standard model of the physics of elementary particles.
The Higgs Boson has not yet been detected; hopefully the Large Hadron Collider will change that. One of the detectors in the collider may finally discover the Higgs Boson. There are also many fears to the discovery of the Higgs Boson. The Higgs Boson is said once discovered or created may create a microscopic black hole which many fear. The idea of black hole occurring was thrown out by many physics claiming the idea was far-fetched
The Large Hadron Collider may be one of the most if the not the most important experiments of the 21st century the actually testing of the Higgs Boson may change modern science and the Big Bang Theory may no longer be a Theory, the Anti-matter may become more understandable to scientist and religion may even lose more ground with beliefs.

internet safety

Posting information on websites may seem harmless, but can actually have many consequences. Not only does posting sensitive information online pose a threat to financial information breeches but also information that may seem harmless such as photos on social networking websites and opinioned blogs online. Exploring the dangers of posting different kinds of information online may help in deciding what information an individual will post online in the future as well as how to prevent information breeches in the future.
It may seem harmless to post photos of friend gatherings on social networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook. Posting a photo drinking alcohol is actually quite dangerous and can result in expulsion from a university. Imagine something has harmless as a photo online can result in expulsion, well this almost happened to my friend at Western Michigan University. My friend Melissa posted a photo with a bottle of alcohol on her Facebook, the floor moderator of her dorm building was her friend on Facebook and seen the photo and reported her, Melissa was not expulsed but could have been. Thanks to Facebook’s specified technology it works likes a database of people using auto fill to find others and with “tagging” of photos people can easily be found and identified. Colleges now may speak of Internet safety to student at orientation: “The schools also are warning students about the impression the photos and text posted on the sites could give to others, such as future employers. Some colleges now discuss Facebook and MySpace.com, another networking site, when talking with incoming freshmen about the problems of unlocked doors, cheating on assignments and other risky behaviors at college.” (Olsen). At Penn state it has become part of the freshmen orientation to speak about Internet safety, something that was not an issue before. The college warns of the potential threat of posting information online in regards to future employers posing an important question of what should be posted online.
It is quite frightening that posting information online could actually diminish a person’s chance of getting hired for job. Imagine not being hired for a job that you were promised and not knowing why. Blogging and expressing oneself online may seem empowering but have you ever wondered if a hiring manager ran across your blog online and you happen to have very different views on issues? It could hurt your chances of getting hired and you may never be informed of it. People are becoming closer with technology and employees and bosses are becoming “friends” on Facebook and MySpace, it makes it may be difficult to overcome extremely different opposite lifestyles and political view’s differences in the work place. Sometimes a minor mistake at work can trigger a boss’s upset with information he or she seen about an employee online. It is alarming to know that information posted online is not only sensitivity to financial realm but also information voluntarily posted public.
The day where transactions and money were only on paper are gone, banking and checking, buying and selling, account information are all online now. It is inevitable not begin checking information regarding banking and credit card online, it is convenient, fast, updated and “secure”. Finical information online has become more secure online then before with new encryptions and tighter security hacker are having a harder time “hacking” information. “Where there is a will there is a way” and hackers are still able to hack information online most recently of TJX “The TJX breach is the latest in a string of incidents that have exposed sensitive consumer information.” (Evers). The TJX case effected many people but the money has been recovered. Hackers are still able to hack information, which may seem scary but new technologies and features have made the Internet a safer place.
The Internet is actually becoming much safer, with increases in security and encryptions becoming longer it is difficult to access information in regards to finances in an experiment with online banking “Customers who experience effective communication with their online bank are likely to trust that bank.”(Rodgers). As for social networking it is difficult to have specific to have specific rules for what to post and what not to. The simple rule I believe is that do not post anything online that you would not reveal to an employer. The Internet can be a wonderful tool as well as recipe for disaster.

YOU have to socio-economically privileged/english speaking/White/male to read this. OH wait your most likely a american college student !!!

What groups of people seem to be the most technologically adapted? Well obviously people that can afford to own computers, however with efficient production the cost of electronics and computers has gone down drastically over the last 20 years making computers affordable and accessible to almost anyone with the desire to have a computer. Vaidhyanathan believes that “digitally adept young people” are usually socio-economically privileged, English speaking, white and male. Technology has become so affordable and accessible that of all sorts have the opportunities to have access to computers especially in the United States.
The mentioning of people with computers and people without computers is not complete without the concept of “digital divide”. The term digital divide is flexible to count people with computers and Internet and people without computers at all. Vaidhyanathan believes that “digitally adept young people” are rich, English speaking and male. In the technologically changing world, computers have almost become essential for people to remain an asset in the work force. According to a study regarding the digital divide, forty-nine to eighty-nine people in the United States “do” have access to computers. Unless over seventy percent of Americans are male, white, rich the digital divide in the United States is not that bad considering that most of America is middle-class and half and half on gender in respect to the overall population. Vaidhyanathan belief of white/male/rich computer supremacy seems to be off. If Vaidhyanathan was speaking of the digital divide in other parts of the world such Africa and Asia Vaidhyanathan would correct. With new projects to promote technology to narrow the digital divide, the digital divide may some day come a single digit problem.

Technologies that help narrow the digital divide include low-cost laptops. The “One Child One Laptop” project has created laptops that would only cost one hundred dollars. Even in third world countries the digital divide is slowly narrowing. The laptop has the ability to network with other laptops such, like (ad-hoc) but with many computers networking and sharing Internet together. The laptop is very rugged, made for third world countries it has solar panels and crank arm to recharge the laptop when other power is not available. The laptop is not the only combatant of the digital divide.
AMD(advance Micro Devices) is the world leader in computer processers, AMD created the 50X15 project which hopes to have fifty percent of the world population with computers and internet the project was started in 2004. With projects like the 50X15 and the one child one laptop it is clear that the digital divide is slowly breaking down.
The United States, which Vaidhyanathan specifically targets on the users of computers and Internet. The first claim that they digitally adept are white is fading away, the department of commerce reported that almost 40% of African American in the United States use computers and almost thirty-two percent of Hispanics. The most impressive report by the department of commerce is that Internet users that are low income (less then$15,000 per year) increased twenty five percent in one year, if the trend continued the number of “socio-economically underprivileged” would be obsolete.
What Vaidhyanathan forgot to mention was some people simply do not want to use computers; some people tend to be old fashion. The same group of people may also refrain from using voice-mail on cell phones and other “difficult” technologies.
I believe that people have the ability to have access to computers if they wish. It does not matter if they are poor or rich, white or black, English speaking or any other language, male or female, it is all a matter of having desire to use the product. We all know that computers do not discriminate on any bases. Vaidhyanathan claim is invalid, and with projects to fill in the gap of the digital divide Vaidhyanathan argument falls short of being true, especially in the United States. The department of Commerce’s statistics clearly show that technology has a level playing field. In the past Vaidhyanathan claims of possessors of technology may seem valid, but with technologies advances, Internet and computers have become available for anyone with the desire to possess them.

Global warming IS NOT REAL.. well it is but its source may change your mind..

I am usual not one of those people that believe in conspiracy theory, but after taking an physics class,(professor David Matzke of university of Michigan-dearborn) I was starting to question if global warming was man-made or it was a product of natural occurrences.

now I actually spent 80 minutes watching this video I was impressed by a lot of the ideas that were given for example, it states global warming is a process out of the control of human beings. Rather it is caused by “cosmic rays” the graph comparing cosmic rays and earth’s temperature is more relevant the idea of CO2 and earths temperature. I was surprised to learn that the earths stratosphere or atmosphere not sure which one carries the gas, gets the most CO2 from the oceans and volcanoes rather then the “human factors” of industry pollution. Car emission.
I believe that global warming is happening but I no longer believe that humans cause it. I do believe however that the steps needed to prevent man-made global warming should still be taken, such as creating our oil-independence and being more “green” it would be best for the human race to do so. Being efficient and energy conservative is still necessary to extend the use of fossil fuels and other natural resources that are do difficult to recycle. In terms of safety the United States needs to be energy independent, the Middle East which is a major provider of oil can longer be a “Stable” source of energy.
Yes you may think I am crazy for believing something that may seem so crazy to people that are diehard environmentalist, but we can not deny facts, just the same way I look at fundamentalist as being crazy for believing the world is only 5000 years old, and you may believe that the video was created by the oil industry but it was not, also oil companies I believe will welcome alternative fuel sources I am sure they want to supply us with what ever it maybe.
I would just like people to know that there is evidence of an alterative viewpoint from the overwhelming majority of the view “man-made global warming” I understand how difficult it is to picture something other then what we are bombarded with, I can see a parallel with religion, most people that grew up with religion find it difficult to view life without religion, even if overwhelming facts disprove religion from the age of the earth to the creation of the earth down to how old dinosaurs are and weather they lived with humans(there are overwhelming date proving this biblical belief). I am just hoping people view the video and began to question more the environment they live in, be more critical. I do not believe our survival as a human race can afford anymore “blind followers” I mean we do need some since people in numbers have more power, but even so they crowd of advocates of a specific issue should be informed of what they are advocating not having innocent children which may not fully understand what is going on.

MAC & PC comics !!

The debate goes on whether people should invest their money in a PC or MAC? There are many factors effecting the decision. I have created a comic strip with personifications of both a MAC and a PC similar to the advertising campaign that Apple Inc. launched.
In the first three cells of my comic strip I introduce the personifications of both a MAC computer (which oddly looks like the finder icon from MAC operating system) and the windows personification which is a interesting looking character that happens to look unintelligent.
The second and third cell show the windows man is walking in front of a Apple Inc. store and sees the Mac man, the Mac man asks him what he is doing near the Apple Inc. store? The windows man first makes a excuse of why he is there then admits he is curious of the Macs and the apple store. The Mac explains that people are getting sick of PCs and the many problems the carry with them. The Windows responds with a statistic stating, “PC’s own 90% of the computer market share”.
On the forth and fifth cell Mac and PC find themselves in different places, first a college class room and then a office. Mac explains that college students are starting to make the switch from PCs to Macs, the PC’s responds with many malfunctions in its response with unnecessary additions of duplicate letters that it has no worries. A student walks by and praises the Mac telling it how appealing it is. In the fifth cell they find themselves in an office, PC claims that it has a strong foothold in business computers. The Mac reminds the PC that many companies are switching from PCs to Macs. A woman in the background then jumps and claims that PC are more boring then Macs. The sixth cell depicts both of them in England; Mac explains that even British people are starting to use Macs.
The seventh cell shows them walking back to the apple store and PC notices Macs size is getting larger which is a reference to its market share. The eighty cell shows them still walking back to the apple store but with a MAC and a PC above them explaining that a test showed that Mac outperformed the PC in many different areas. The PC then claims it is “initially” cheaper. The final cell shows them as if they have just left the apple store the PC seems to be over zealous about the experience and is afraid that its CPU is going to over heat. PC states that it must return to “circuit city” Mac responds by asking PC if he could check out the Windows store knowing that non exist.
The comic strip is swayed with Apple Inc. being depicted as the better operating system, but it should not be the sole source for a decision for purchasing a computer. Many other factors apply when making a decision.

Mac or/& PC

Yesterday I made my transition from a PC to a Mac it was not what I had expected, I haven’t realized how little I actually know about a Mac and their operating system, I assumed that I would just transfer all my  media and files onto the Mac. It got hectic I couldn’t open office, every time I move the mouse to a corner “widgets” or “spaces” would activated, very beautiful graphics but I was still unsure was happening. I have always been one of those people that learn to adjust very easy,   when I switched from windows XP to windows Vista  it was very simple to me, XP looked like it got a facelift. On the other hand switching to the leopard O.S was like being with a new person just minor resemblance to windows interface. I own an iphone, after looking at Mac O.S I started to realize how uniform they fit together the iphone and Mac.  Now I have only had a little experience with my Macbook which is top of the line:(4GB RAM, 2.4GHZ duo, 250GB hard drive). So far I am impressed just perplexed with operating system. I plan on becoming an expert with all the controls and the entire Mac O.S. the reason I switching from Vista to Leopard is because of all the online feedback I hear about Mac and how they are so superior to PC. The most compelling clams are: “If you spend more time trying to get your computer to work and less time doing what you want, it’s time to get a Mac. Because Apple makes both the software and the hardware, everything works together, just as it should. That’s why people who get a Mac love a Mac. And why you will, too.” I assumed they are referring to Windows being unreliable, always having an issue and shutting down programs. Well this is partly true most PC users assume that is part of computing life (claim) that “sometimes” something will not work or shutdown. I believe what apple is claiming is that these pesky obstacles should not be part of our experience on computers.

When you buy a PC, you’re buying hardware from one company and an operating system and software from other companies. Not so with a Mac. Because Apple builds both the computer and the software that comes with it, they’re literally made for each other. This means that a Mac rarely freezes or crashes. Occasionally an application might quit, but it won’t affect the rest of your system. And Mac OS X resists most viruses, so you can do anything — without worrying about losing everything. Is another claim  by apple that because apple builds both the hardware and software the product is extremely reliable, what I like about apple is they are quite casual in their claims they are saying that  a application/program “might quit but it will not affect the rest of your computer” meaning it’s not a 100% but more reliable then a PC. The final statement I hear is quite true that the Mac OS resist most viruses, apparently the drive behind this is that apples O.S is only used buy a minority of all computer users and a “hackers” when they release a virus is to affect as many people as possible, so apple are less likely to become affect which would be true for the time being.

I will be adding to this blog-tony

Screen Shot

Working in digital space can be a lot different than working in physical space. Digital space in much easier then the real world would ever be the ability to go back and fix mistakes, edit and move things around, work on multiple things at once although that is not a good idea.

The real world and working on paper is outdated I believe close to nobody writes books or papers on actual paper. Humans are bound to make mistakes and computers give humans the ability to go back and fix mistakes as well as help them find them.  The advantages of working in the digital world outweigh the negatives which can actually be variable.

The only negatives are why people didn’t have the ability to work in the digital world before, not mention the many distractions we face when working in the digital world. First of music can be played when working on project it can either help us or hurt us. Second the internet can be a bit of a distraction whether is clicking link after link in the Wikipedia or being bombarded with notifications from social networking websites we can easily be distracted by the digital space. Digital space also has the flaw of mechanical errors, with problems such as people’s computers not being compatible with each other which give them the inability to exchange work; although this problem is receding it sometimes affects us.

The main idea is the digital space makes things either to mend to our own liking and the advantage of editing and saving documents, merging them and sending them to each other.

Visual Glossary

1. Looking

Looking has many definitions, depending on how you “look” at the word it could be mean simply your eyes glancing at a object nearby, “1: to make sure or take care (that something is done)2: to ascertain by the use of one's eyes <look what I brought you>”. In terms of authority can looking be like the photo shows a government watching over you with mechanical eyes? Usual when using the work “looking” it is to direct someone’s attention to something. The word “looking” can also take on a more complex meaning such as in art to what the photograph directs your eye too. The pattern your eyes follow in a painting. Sometimes looking can be directed to a specific direction with arrows and even driving, companies and traffic authorities have different methods for directing our attention to specific advertising or traffic signals. Even websites are designed with looking in mind.

2. Visual culture

Visual culture, from my understanding of it, is defined as the way a visual piece looks like at specific time period that reflects the culture of the civilization that created it. “examination of imagery produced by a culture in terms of its use and construction or reinforcement of that culture in a visual form.” This apple logo I believe came out in the 1980’s which is a retro time period the logo (which actually resembles a gay pride flag) is a reflection of the1980s when the logo would have been in style. Currently the apple logo is very modern and clean cut just like the style of our time.

3) Photographic truth

Photographic truth may actually be a very simple concept that simply states how real photography is. This photo which was actually a very controversial advertisement that “Dove” released on how distorted the image of beauty is. The model for the add was actually a unattractive women then after some makeup and \hair done the model is transformed finally the Photoshop is done which actually maybe the deadliest culprit to photographic truth.  The idea is what can we believe? Even photos can be altered.

4) Icon

An icon is something that represents something else, the fish which suppose to represent Jesus and Christianity when it was thought to be a pagan religion. Now the fish is a wide spread symbol or icon. The word icon can also mean something the represents a whole bunch of things  such a person being a “sex icon” the word icon can also have prestige factor to it like a company’s logo or its “icon” represents its quality.

5) Information design

Information design I believe is the way we use design to make information presentable in a very interesting way, instead of just presenting figures we can now present numbers and information with different interesting looking graphs which I believe is the basis of information design.“When the crafting of messages and meaning is so central to our lives, information design is not only important—it is essential.”   The idea is that information can longer just be presented in a boring way but rather with a more eye catching appeal.

4c) Playstation 3, Grand theft auto, political statement, Controversy, GameStop, Rock star games, childrens game, adult game, Mature, paradox, cartoon, fox, Cat, Firefox

6) I believe that Google does the most work of the search engines. Google is dominant with all its results although they can be general. Alta Vista seems to have a outdated logo but the results tend to gear towards education, Yahoo and Google are both the among the most popular but not so much for Alta vista which is not as popular.

13) three pieces of advice for people trying to conduct research on the web and trying to assess the validity and credibility of websites in general, is to check the websites name .com’s seem to be less valid then .org or .gov because they are most likely nonprofit websites., do the statistics or numbers seem realistic to be used as fact and where did the research come from?  Most of the time research tends to be most reliable if it is the least unbiased, usually from school websites (.edu) which have databases. 13.b) the visual content on the web can be altered with developments in “Photoshop” technology   the best way to check validity and credibility of visual content to think critically if the photo is possible. Second is to check the website it came from.
